Toilet Training

| › About Us Index ‹ || « Return to previous page |

 At Child’s Paradise Daycare Centre, we do not have a specific age for toilet training, however we encourage all children to perform the toilet routine of sitting on the toilet. Toilet training is achieved when the child has control over urination and bowel movements and have clothing that encourages independence. Successful toilet training can only be achieved with consistent routines and when a child is able to know and communicate the sensations of the need to eliminate their bladder/bowel. Toilet-training happens at a wide range of ages and at various speeds. Children can train at a very young age or very quickly, it can happen very consistently or there can be a long period of inconsistency. There can be times of regression, or in some cases children can appear to be fully trained in one environment and not the next. These situations are very individual and nothing to be concerned about. Toilet-training will happen. Our goal is to make the toileting experience pressure-free and do everything we can as parents and educators to help the child be successful while learning. Parents and Educators will discuss the child’s progress with toilet-training, how it is going, and any modifications/changes that could help the child be more successful.

The following is the general ‘rule of thumb’ when a child is enrolled at Child’s Paradise and is in the stages of toilet training: Until fully toilet-trained, children should arrive to daycare in diapers (Velcro tabs on sides) and wearing clothing that is easy to take on/off. Staff will take the child at specified toileting times, and then additionally as requested by child and/or when soiled. When a child is consistently initiating using the toilet for urination and bowel movements and has less than three (0-2) ‘accidents’/ week, staff will ask that parents try their child at home in underwear for several days (i.e. over a long weekend) and then send the child to daycare in pullups (with side Velcro tabs) or underwear with a change of clothes.
